Lost

For those of you who have become addicted to the well-known tv show Lost, you constantly see conflict, drama, and distrust popping up everywhere throughout the show. Now this may just seem like another tv drama series, but there are some things we can learn from this show.

For those who are not familiar with this show, Lost is a story about a plane that crashed on an island in the middle of nowhere. Just under 50 people survived the crash and are now stranded on a tropical island. However, it’s not necessarily a tropical paradise. There are many dangers and struggles the survivors go through. With a far-fetched hope of getting off the island, the survivors face dangers of wild animals, a need for food, and a rugged terrain, but it seems their most dangerous enemy is themselves. Though I have only begun to watch the first season, almost every featured character has come face to face with death. Most of the reasons for their run-ins with near death are their mistrust of each other.

This situation can easily demonstrate a state at its earliest beginnings. This is how ancient civilizations began: in a state of anarchy. I must now ask all of you what you believe would be the most effective form of government in such a situation. Should the island run as a democracy? That may cause too much competetiveness as opposed to working as a team. Maybe they ought to have a form of socialism or communism? Or maybe one person should run the whole show as a dictator? If that were the best way, who would be elected as the dictator? Post your opinions about what type of government you would push for if you were in their situation!
